    Be your own superhero

The other day I asked my daughter who her favorite superhero is, and her answer was Elsa. Elsa? As in Elsa from frozen? You know the queen of Arendelle that almost kills her sister and sends her country into the worst snow storm of the century. That one? Really kid. I mean from all the superhero's you had to pick from you pick a princess? Should of guessed that one though as she is obsessed with all things princess. But anyway, just as I was about to explain how Elsa is not a superhero, that girl immediately put me in my place (she's good at that).

About a month ago Disney released the highly anticipated Frozen 2 trailer. Cue "Let it go" being played on replay in the houses of little girls everywhere. This is when I really wish our Alexa could get sick of constantly playing a song and just refuse to, or lose her s*** like the rest of us. I know I know, only in my dreams, which may I just say are filled with frozen now because of how many times she has asked to watch it. If anyone were to look at my browser search history, they would think I had an unhealthy obsession with frozen and would never talk to me again ( I mean in that case maybe I should show some people...kidding).

If you have yet to watch this trailer though, do it now. Seriously, stop whatever you are doing and watch it. My mind was blown after because Disney went in an entirely different direction with this sequel then I think anyone was expecting. And that is exactly why my daughter claims Elsa as her favorite superhero. In the first frozen we all saw Elsa as a queen (pretty crappy one if you ask me) but in this one, she kicks a** saving the world. Forget the crown, dresses and queen duties, she travels everywhere and uses her powers to fight and defend her people. The trailer opens up with Elsa pulling back her hair and running on water. That's right you heard me, she not only walks but runs on water. Pretty bada** if you ask me. But that scene right there, is the one my daughter keeps reenacting. And what I love most is Elsa doesn't get it right the first time, but she keeps trying. She refuses to give up. And that is just the message I want my daughter seeing.

The other day I locked my keys in the car after a ice cream for lunch day. Just my luck right? Or my horrible mom brain, you decide. Panic immediately set into my daughters eyes as she was worried we would never get into the car again. My anxiety sky rocketed but I remained calm for her ( I call that a win) and remembered Chevy has an app you can unlock your car from. Bingo! However, I of course couldn't remember my pin for it (go figure), so Addie patiently waited as I talked to OnStar on the phone for a bit. A few minutes later and bam, I unlocked my car and we were on our way. Addie cheerfully sung Dora the explorers celebration song, except changing the words to our situation: "We unlocked our car and got the keys ya we did it, we did it, we did it, hooray!" And yes, I know all you moms out there just sang that song in Dora's slightly annoying voice. I mean at least its not Caillou.

Fast forward to later that evening when I asked Addie who her favorite superhero is and got the response that changed my thinking completely. You see I was just about to correct her when she explained to me that Elsa is her favorite superhero because she can do anything herself. She looked at me and said, "Just like you figured out all by yourself how to unlock your car, Elsa does the same thing by saving the world all on her own." How can I disagree with that? She told me I was my own superhero today and I used my magic powers to save myself and oh, that she wants to be just like Elsa and me. Did you see my heart just melt into a million pieces? Because trust me, it did.

We all have this idea of what a superhero should look like or be. More times then not its the stereotypical male with big muscles. But here is Disney changing that image with one trailer at a time. Elsa is showing little girls everywhere that they can be their own superhero. My daughter is learning she doesn't need to depend on anyone, she can be her own hero. And while I am trying my hardest to set that example, it sure is nice to have something backing me up. Thank you Disney for showing my daughter its okay to not get it right the first time, but that you should also never give up. For showing my daughter she is strong, brave and amazing the way she is.

So with that Addie, keep being you. Keep holding your head high and marching to your own parade. Continue celebrating each and every one of the small victories. Remember you are stronger then you think. Be your own superhero today and everyday. You can do anything if you put your mind to it. And so I will end this blog in the words of Addie, "I don't need a man to be whoever I want to be." You got it girl, and you best always believe it.

~And as for my daughter, I will raise her to believe she can breathe fire!~
